I don’t know who started this blog White Proverbs or if it will last past tomorrow, but I know that I experienced some white privilege racism/microagression bullshit this past Thursday that left me shaken and I am so glad I ran across this blog (Thanks Revereseracism for the link!) I was immediately drawn to it because of course I recognized all of the comments from white people having heard them before. With my own experience fresh on my mind, I begin to see similarities right away.
I won’t even go deep in to my story except this: I was the only woman at a table of 2 Latino men, one Black man and a white man who were all raving about how much they loved Django and thought that it was a wonderful love story. !!! Yes. So as a Black woman, I gave them a five minute lecture - I will admit - about how it was racist, sexist drivel. The men of color looked like they disagreed, but still affirmed that they liked it, but the old ass white dude says “Do you want to rant or try and convince us?” After I scoffed and said I am not interested in convincing him, because I don’t give a shit, he says “Oh right, you just want to blame whitey.”
As I sat stunned looked for word, the men of color at the table quickly said “we should change the subject, let’s don’t talk about this.” None came to my defense.
So this blog was life affirming in feeling heard and validated. Thank you internet! and thank you to the folks at White Proverbs Love and peace! :-)
